How to Make a Smoked Old-Fashioned

Looking to impress your friends & family with a fancy cocktail or two this holiday season? Our signature Smoked Old Fashioned has been a hit ever since we opened the tent flaps of The Watering Hole Guest Lounge & Bar in 2017. Our surprisingly simple to make Smoked Old Fashioned is an impressive spectacle to behold (and tastes to die for). This recipe was crafted by our Master Mixologist and we guarantee it’ll be the hit of your holiday parties.

Ingredients & Supplies:

  • 2 oz of Rye or Bourbon Whiskey (our favourite brands are Maker’s Mark or Kinsip’s Maple Flavoured Whiskey)

  • 2-3 dashes of Angostura Bitters

  • 1 TBSP of Maple Syrup (you could also replace this with a sugar cube or simple syrup)

  • Twist of orange peel

  • Cherry

  • Wood chips (we like cherrywood or maple chips)

  • Small torch or BBQ lighter

Directions:

  1. Assemble a small handful of wood chips on a fireproof mat.

  2. Light the wood chips on fire until they are smouldering.

  3. Place an upside down rock glass on top of the wood chips to capture the smoke.

  4. Combine Rye or Whiskey into a cocktail shaker and add maple syrup, bitters, and ice.

  5. Shake vigorously.

  6. Strain into the rock glass and add 1-2 ice cubes.

  7. Garnish with an orange peel and cherry.

Happy holidays from the team at Whispering Springs Wilderness Retreat!
