Breweries & Cideries of Northumberland County
There is something, quite literally, brewing in the hills of Northumberland County. Over the past few years, a burgeoning craft beer and cider scene has been growing and evolving throughout Northumberland. These local breweries and cideries are crafting refreshing artisanal brews, sourcing local ingredients and honouring the craft beer tradition. If you’re planning a trip to Northumberland County, here are a few of our favourite breweries and cideries to stop by and grab a pint:
Empire cider
Located in the heart of Apple Country, Empire Cider is unlike any other cider you have tried before. Made with real Ontario apples, Empire Cider stays true to the traditional ciders of yore. Their cider is unfiltered, unpasteurized and is bottle carbonated with local honey. The result is a unique and refreshing dry cider, the perfect accompaniment to a sunny, summer day.
Wild Card Brewing Company
Located in Trenton, the Wildcard Brewing Company is a family endeavor spearheaded by Nate Card. Offering unique and delicious blends, the Wild Card Brewing Company is a growing force in Quinte West. Their Tap Room is open 7 days a week and features 8 different beers on tap. Their brews can also be found in many restaurants and bars throughout Northumberland and Prince Edward County.
Northumberland Hills Brewery
Founded by Rick Bailey and Michael Niles, Northumberland Hills Brewery is a grassroots effort that epitomizes the spirit of craft beer itself. Putting 15 years of brewing experience to good use, Bailey and Niles have crafted unique artisanal beers, with their Honey Badger and Cold Springs amongst their most popular.
William St. Brewery
William St. Brewery is one of the most well-known craft breweries in the county, and for good reason. Visit their Tap Room to sample a flight of delicious craft beer or indulge in a pint. They also offer a rotating menu of aperitifs to complement their beer selection. Tours of the brewery are available by appointment, and the Tap Room can be reserved for special events.
401 Cider Brewery
Located along Northumberland’s famous Apple Route, the 401 Cider Brewery uses local apples that meet strict growing and quality standards. The result is a delicious, crisp and lightly carbonated beverage. The brewery is situated in Colborne’s iconic Big Apple, the mecca for all things apple in Southern Ontario. Next time you’re in the area stop by for a swill of cider and a homemade apple pie.
From the bustling streets of Cobourg to the heart of Apple Country, the craft beer and cider scene is an exciting development in Northumberland County. You will be able to find a selection of local beers and ciders at Whispering Springs Wilderness Retreat in The Watering Hole Guest Bar & Lounge.
